Come Walking Series of Walks: Holcombe and Buckden Wood.

After spending some time at Lumb Carr arranging parking spaces, twenty-seven walkers heading up to Holcombe Village walking as far as the school, where we turned left and climbing the steep footpath up to Moor Road. Once on the track we turned right and walked as far as the entrance to Buckden Wood, passing Chatterton Close, a National Trust property, undergoing restoration work.

The wood looked most attractive in the evening light being made all the better due to the large volume of water flowing down the brook, which flows into the River Irwell at Strongstry. On arriving at Helmshore Road, we carefully crossed and continued through the wood, all the time avoiding the protruding tree roots.

When we reached the footbridge, at The Cliff, we turned right crossing the bridge and headed for the track that took us into Higher Stubbins. Continuing along the track, we eventually arrived at Ox Hey Woods, where there is a steep climb before joining another track which leads down to the Old Mill Hotel, and on to the Rose and Crown Pub on Carr Street.

Turning right on Carr Street we headed for Dundee Lane, where we turned right onto a footpath that took us into Tagg Wood and back to where had parked our cars at Lumb Carr, having covered 4.5 picturesque miles.
