Come Walking Series: Holcombe, Buckden Wood, Top Wood Holcombe Circular
We have sadly reached the final walk in 2021 Friday night series of walks, which has been one of our most successful with 84 walkers taking part over the twelve weeks. Tonight’s walk started from Lumb Carr car park, Holcombe with seventeen walkers joining us on a warm and dry evening. After crossing the main road, we joined a footpath that took us onto Holcombe Old Road where we turned right and walked up to Holcombe Village. Once through the village the track changes its name to Moor Road which we continued to follow until we reached the Nation Trust property at Chatterton Close where we turned right and headed down to Helmshore Road.
After crossing the road, we turned right and first left down a farm track where we followed a footpath across the fields to Buckden Wood.
At the bottom of the wood, we crossed the footbridge and continued along the path to the back of Lavender Hills Nursing Home.
The footpath soon widened out to become a track where there was evidence of the cotton mills that were prevalent in the valley. One such ruin was the Tentering Tower which was part of Stubbins Vale mill. Here we spent some time admiring the building that contained many clues as to how it was used.
Once back on the track we walked through Higher Stubbins and into Ox Wood passing The Old Mill hotel before joining Carr Street, in Ramsbottom where we turned right and right again into Taper Street. The street leads to a section of the village link route which climbs steeply through Top Wood back taking us back up to Holcombe village. By this time the wood was in total darkness, and we had to use torches to light our way. Back at the car park, having covered 4 miles, we said our goodbyes for another year looking forward to the 2022 series of walks.
