Come Walking Series: Greenmount to Roger Worthington’s Grave

On a glorious August evening, thirty-two walkers met behind Greenmount Church and due to the large number we separated into two groups. Both heading in the same direction but separated by ten minutes. We made our way through the Golf Course towards Bolton Road which we crossed and walked up Spenleach Lane to the MOD Rifle Range. After passing the Range House we followed a footpath onto Hawkshaw Lane.

At the top of the lane, we turned right and after a short distance entered the walled area that is the site of Roger Worthington’s grave. Here we retold the story relating to the grave and the part that Ralph Rooney, another local character, played in preserving the site.

After visiting the grave, we re-traced our steps and headed towards Holcombe Hey Farm and onto Cinder Hill and the site of the Holcombe Moor Heritage Society archaeological dig. Our route back to Greenmount was along The Ridge and through Redisher Wood having covered a distance of 5 sunny miles.
