Circular walk of Redisher Wood
It was a beautiful night for the last of this year’s Friday Evening walks. Starting from behind Greenmount Church our route took us along the edge of the Golf course, past Holhouse farm, across Bolton Road and up Redisher Lane into Redisher Wood. Where we followed alongside Holcombe Brook, then Simons Lodge before going over the footbridge to the ancient sunken track to pass Simon Sundial cottage and Simons farm before turning right towards the army camp.
Opposite the army assault course, once used in the TV programme The Krypton Factor, we turned right and followed the narrow footpath down and once more over Holcombe Brook before going uphill to the ruins of Higher Ridge.
We then made our way off the Ridge and up through the woods to the top of Redisher Wood, which is the best ancient woodland in the whole of the Bury area. We followed the narrow footpath with marvellous views across to Winter Hill and beyond to where the sun was low in the sky.
This path comes to a T junction, before turning right down the many steps we watch the setting sun now glowing red in the night sky.
We cross the wooden bridge over a minor brook back into the woods and over Holcombe Brook before retracing our steps back to Greenmount, just before nightfall.
