Monthly Long Walk: Northern Moors, Wet Moss, and Holcombe Moor.
This month’s walk started from the car park on Lumb Carr Road, with ten walkers making there way through Tagg Wood and down to Carr Street, in Ramsbottom, where we turned left at the Rose & Crown and headed through Higher Stubbins to Buckden Wood.
At the top of the wood, we turned right on Moor Road, and walked as far as Robin Hood’s Well where we enjoyed an early coffee stop.
After a short break we joined a section of the West Pennine Way, Link Route and headed towards Bull Hill but instead of going to the summit we followed the path around the hill that took us onto Wet Moss. We had planned the walk so that we could see the new stone slabs which the Nation Trust, has laid on the moss. The stones made the route much easier to cross the moor, and we were soon arrived at Longshaw Head and the site of the old maggot factory. Instead of dropping down to Moor Bottom Road we continued around the edge of the moor, in the direction of Holcombe.
The path eventually descends to Red Book, which we crossed and made use of the sheltered valley to eat our lunch. After lunch we continued along the edge of the moor until we joined the track that leads to the summit of Holcombe Hill, where we turned right and headed down the track and back to Lumb Carr car park having covered nine blustery miles.
