Monthly Short Walk, Circular walk to Buckhurst Lodge

On a dull overcast morning, with a forecast of rain later, eighteen walkers set out from Greenmount Old School and walked down Brandlesholme Road, heading through the fields and onto Hazel Hall Lane. After a short distance we crossed over a stile, on our right, and joined a narrow path, that overlooked Summerseat Garden Centre, eventually dropping down to the river Irwell.  After following the river for a short distance, we joined Wood Road Lane, and turned left across the bridge, heading up to the railway line joining another narrow path, which took us up to Rowlands Road and through Felshaw’s Farm.

Once across Walmersley Road we made our way through the fields and onto Walmersely Old Road, where after turning left we waked for a short distance before turning down a track leading down to Whitewall Farm. After walking through the farmyard, we headed across the fields to Sales’s Lane, where we turned left and headed up Buckhurst Lodge where we found shelter as by this time it had started to rain hard.

Having been refreshed we walked back into the hamlet of Buckhurst, heading through the attractive old cottages, and joining a track leading towards Mam Hill and Bury Old Road. Across the road we climbed over a stile and joined a path that took us through the fields to Bast House, where the footpath had been diverted due to renovation work. It was only a short walk to the A56 which, we crossed, and headed down Bass Lane taking the first path on our left. Once across Brooksbottom Cricket field we headed down into Summerseat and back to Greenmount having covered 6.5 interesting miles.
