Monday Walk 4/10/21

Monday Walk 4/10/21

On a breezy Monday morning, with a hint of rain in the air, 24 walkers from Greenmount, and surrounding areas, set off, from Greenmount Old School, to walk the byways around Tottington.

The route taken was through Old Kay’s Park. The walk continued across Cann St. and on to Watling St. and then onto Tottington Rd. By this time the weather had improved and there were periods of warm sunshine for the rest of the walk.

From Bowstone Farm the route continued to Hey Head Farm. On a previous visit to this route one of the fields had been occupied by a herd of angry, aggressive cows. An alternative route was planned if required. The cows, however, were not around on this visit so the walk could continue as planned. From Hey Head Farm the walkers continued to Old Holt’s Farm and Bentley Hall Road where a break was taken for refreshments. An indistinct path was then followed back to Watling St, at the zig zag in the road. A path was taken from Watling St to Birchen Bower Farm. At this point the route went deliberately “off piste” in order to inspect some little used rights of way near Gorsey Clough. The paths were found but as expected were not clearly seen on the ground.

From the cluster of houses at Hey Head a path was taken which led back to civilisation at Moorside Rd in Tottington. This road leads onto Sunny Bower St and eventually to Market St Tottington. The walk continued down Laurel St. and back on to the old railway line and back to the Old School at about 12.15. The distance covered was approximately 6 miles.
