  • From the Jumbles Car Park go past café following track continue almost to head of reservoir. Turn L to cross main bridge then take FP R, off track up steps through wood.
  • Continue through woods and a field to main road B6391.
  • Cross road and turn L, follow pavement up to the entrance of Turton Tower, turn R and keep straight on passing Turton Tower on R.
  • Continue over Railway Bridge & follow track up hill.
  • At T junction turn R following track with stone wall on R as far as kissing gate on left.
  • Turn L through kissing gate, then up hill towards the barn, through kissing gate, continue in same direction going up through wood to moors.
  • After kissing gate at top of moor turn R and follow well worn FP to Trigpoint on Cheetham Close continue in same direction. Go over stile and turn sharp L to follow wall down hill and round L hand corner down to FP sign and junction of stone walls.
  • Over stile turn sharp R through kissing gate. Keeping to FP with stone wall on your R. Through next kissing gate at fork keep R still with wall on R until kissing gate onto farm track.
  • Turn L down this stony track.
  • Follow down going past sign saying ‘Private Drive. ‘
  • Just after this take FP on left, down to minor road, cross road and take FP opposite following stream on L to main road A666.
  • Cross road then turn R for a few meters. Take FP at rear of terminus bus stop. (This can be overgrown with vegetation).
  • Over two more stiles and diagonally across small field to gate
  • Turn L follow tarmac lane passing property, take stile after old barn across field towards church.
  • Turn L follow FP between stone walls, then grassy embankment to minor road.
  • Turn L and follow road to just before farm on R.
  • Turn R follow FP down fields over stiles.
  • Turn R onto track at T-junction turn R through kissing gate and keep to main path.
  • Follow this main track through Longworth Clough past concrete building on L and then following with stream on L.
  • Cross footbridge just before disused factory, take FP going right round the railings of this factory. Continue on FP with stream on R. Follow path which climbs steeply up hill, continue on FP across heathlands then with deep drop to stream on R until eventually coming to reservoir (Mill Lodge) on R—approximately 1 km from disused factory.
  • Here turn L on unclear FP which winds steeply up hill to field. (DO NOT GO STRAIGHT ON NEXT TO MILL LODGE).
  • Follow FP with deep gorge on L; continue on, following round edge of field, take R fork in path near to garden hedge and head to the San Marino Restaurant Car Park.
  • Cross San Marino’s Car park to main road A675, turn L
  • Follow pavement for a short distance then turn R, cross road and follow FP signposted to Winter Hill
  • After walking through wood and next kissing gate, cross track and take wide, well-trodden path opposite leading up towards mast.

  • (To visit Trig. Point: – on approaching the top turn R. passing the only bench on the route and head across the moorland with the fencing on the left, after rounding the high fenced off area head for the stile. The Trig. Point is just beyond this. Return to the West Pennine Way turning L. down access road and re-join at the bend in the road.

Due to the Moorland Fires of 2018 and request from the Winter Hill Recovery Partnership the West Pennine Way has been re-routed to avoid walking over bare peat currently undergoing restoration works. Please follow the new route.

  • If not visiting Trig. Point) on approaching the top, go straight on through the gates passing the mast and transmitting station to take the first footpath left.
  • (At this point if doing the shorter option continue down tarmacked road to left hand bend take the footpath right to top of Two Lads to re-join the WPW.
  • At fork in path turn right.
  • Continue on path as for as stile into Roscow Clough Tenement.

OPTIONAL LOOP FROM THIS STILE TO TAKE IN THE BEAUTIFUL MOORLAND RESERVOIR AND MASS TRESPASS MEMORIAL STONE, which were both on the original West Pennine Way route. NB this path is closed between March and Mid July during the Bird breeding season.

LOOP

  • Continue on the track down steps, across bridge and up steps.
  • At the top turn left onto moorland.
  • Follow path alongside Dean Mill Reservoir.
  • At far corner turn right on the path down the embankment, across moorland and through kissing gates on to Coal Pit Lane.
  • Turn right as far as first bend.
  • Go through kissing gate to pass Mass Trespass memorial stone and return to stile at Roscow Clough Tenement.
  • Go through Clough.
  • Turn right to Holdens Farm
  • Until the footpath through Roscow Clough Tenement has been improved you are advised to keep on Coal Pit lane to Holden Farm.
  • Continue on this good path which goes round the moorland and then after steps, take stile on L through wooded area down to tarmac track.
  • Here turn R and follow toward Holden Farm. Just before farm buildings take concessionary bridleway L and follow round front of farm, ignore FP going down valley. Continue on stony track. After track comes up from wooded dip take R fork up to signpost.
  • Turn R. uphill keeping fence on right and continue following this to tarmac access road.
  • Turn R. for 50 metres then L. at sign post to go over footbridge and up to the top of Two Lads.
  • At top continue in same direction on well worn path down to rough road at Pike Cottage.
  • Turn R and continue to fork in road, take R fork to top of Rivington Pike.
  • Go down steps to stony road, cross road and go R between rounded stone gate posts into grounds. Carry on for about 500 metres. At open space go across ground over old tiles and take first flight of steps down. Immediately turn R and follow this path which runs parallel to the stony track just crossed, but is a more interesting way to the Pigeon Tower.
  • The route does not go up to the tower but turns L down stone steps then L. again to follow path alongside pond. Turn R. down main steps and then over 7 arched bridge.
  • Continue going downhill by taking every FP on the R to kissing gate and then through fields to next kissing gate to woods. Go straight on, following track, which bends to R then goes behind Rivington Hall and Barn to Rivington Hall Barn Car Park.
  • (To shorten the route by 2 miles between Winter Hill and Two Lads then when at the top of Winter Hill follow the access road passing the Mast down to a left hand bend here take FP on right to top of Two Lads.)
