Basic route instructions  –   Rivington to Roddlesworth   –  8.2 miles
                                                                                                                        

Distance: 8.2 miles this section can be walked in stages. Rivington Hall Barn to Rivington Village Green is 0.4 miles, Rivington Village Green to White Coppice is 3.8 miles, White Coppice to Roddlesworth Info. Centre is 4 miles.

  • Cross the car park, take the wide stony track past the barrier, continue on this to the notice ‘Chapel House Wood” on R. At notice turn R on FP and follow to tarmac road, turn L and follow road to village green passing the Village Green Café – in front of Church.
  • On village green facing stocks turn R to cross road, go through gate in
  • Follow FP until it joins tarmac lane, here turn R and follow tarmac lane all the way up.
  • Turn L over stile next to field gate
  • Follow FP through field, keeping Yarrow Reservoir on L
  • Go over next stile and continue in same direction following way markers across fields ignoring footpaths off to the right and head towards fenced off wooded area, way-marker on corner of fencing points to kissing gate which leads onto minor road.
  • Turn L down road and across bridge, continue on road for about 10m, turn R up slope and over stile
  • Head straight on up the field to the wooden finger post at the top of the hill.
  • Turn L signed “Jepson’s Farm”. KEEP to highest ground, look for ladder stile.
  • Once over this continue straight on keeping wall on your R to next stile, go over stile then head towards R of farm buildings, go over stile and walk between buildings onto tarmac road, turn R walking up road for about 100m
  • Take ladder stile on L
  • Follow FP which follows line of telegraph poles to gap in trees ahead
  • Go over stile, then keeping farm buildings on your L, follow fencing round to corner where there is a gate, go over stile on R of gate
  • Go over another stile onto tarmac road
  • Turn L then take FP L through wall opposite Manor House
  • Walk straight across field, through kissing gate, down steep hill. Over bridge carry straight on down hill passing woodland trail sign on R and High Bullough North Reservoir on L down to cross paths.
  • Turn R follow main path, wooded hill on L, after bend Angelzarke Reservoir can be seen on L
  • Walking parallel to reservoir continue to tarmac road
  • Turn L, then after 20m take FP on R
  • Follow stony track up hill and round the bend, go L to stile next to metal gate, cross bridge
  • Turn R down bridleway for a short distance.
  • Turn L through small metal gate and take FP up field passing tree on
  • L which has a hole in its trunk, continue to the stone wall
  • Follow FP keeping wall on your L then keeping fencing on your R, go over stile and down passing Barnfield House.
  • Turn R down lane passing cottages and farm to, at T junction turn R and follow rough road straight on to White Coppice Cricket Club.
  • At Cricket ground follow path round to R walking in front of Cricket Pavilion.
  • Continue going through kissing gate, straight on over stone bridge, through next kissing gate. Turn L and follow FP to stony track, at fork take FP R going steeply uphill to gap in stone wall
  • Through gap take moorland path
  • At T junction turn R signed to “Belmont Road”, walk passing a coppice on your R and farm ruins on your L
  • Continue heading for the highest hill “Great Hill” taking L fork up to hill top
  • At stone cross seating go straight over rough and boggy plateau, then downhill. Darwen Tower can be seen in the distance.
  • AT BOTTOM OF FIRST STEEP SLOPE TAKE R. FORK HEADING TOWARDS ISOLATED BUILDING ‘PICCADILLY’ ON A675, ON A COMPASS BEARING OF 60 degrees (WHICH IS TO THE R. OF DARWEN TOWER SEEN IN THE DISTANCE. (NB ROUTE DOES NOT GO PAST RUINS AND TREES).
  • CONTINUE DOWN GRASS COVERED STONY PATH THEN STEPS AND ACROSS STREAM, THEN FOLLOW WELL WORN FP DOWN TO MAIN ROAD.
  • Cross road, turn R walking for 100m along side of main road with house on your L
  • Take 1st FP on L
  • Go down through kissing gate into wood and at T junction turn L (on R are the ruins of Hollingworth Hall and the well house).
  • After 20m turn R through carved gate posts
  • Continue to cross paths, go straight across passing a stone block
  • Keeping to main stony path follow to just before the wall at the main road, here turn L and walk with wall and road on your R following this path to a now disused car park.
  • Take FP by climbing over fencing near stone wall (as fencing is now across what used to be FP continue keeping wall and road on your R and at fork in paths go L and continue over next stile.
  • Follow FP to end of woods then turn R to main road.
  • Cross road to Roddlesworth Café and Information Centre behind bus shelter.
