EAGLEY BROOK WALK
On Saturday June 16th the weather forecast was for light rain all morning and that might have put off a few walkers for our stroll from Hall i’th Wood in Bolton up the Eagley Valley to Bromley Cross and back. In fact there was hardly any rain and four of us enjoyed a walk past the ruins of Oaks Hall, once the grand home of the mill-owning Ashworth family and now an almost forgotten corner of the grounds of Canon Slade School. The return path was a very pleasant woodland walk with glimpses of the Eagley Brook and we were rewarded with sightings of dippers and a solitary roe deer. We passed through Bank Top where the Ashworth family built cottages for their mill workers before arriving back in time for Hall i’th Wood Museum to open its doors for a free tour.
