Friday 18th July 2025.

Come Walking Series of Walks, Burrs Country Park and Chesham Woods.

On a very busy evening in the park, due to preparation for the weekend festival, twenty four walkers headed towards the Brown Cow Pub, first built as a farmhouse in 1752. After turning right, at the pub, we walked through the woods into Walmersley, where we crossed the road and made our way to Clarence Park Lido, built as a reservoir in 1888 but later converted into a boating lake in 1964.

Once passed the lido we entered Chesham Woods and continued through the densely planted wood that contained a wide variety of trees, including a sweet chestnut tree. We soon arrived at Chesham Road, which by now, was just a rough lane. Once across the lane we continued through the woods, turning left and walking through Chesham Green Wood. At the top of the wood, we turned left, near the ruins of Chesham Green Cottage, and joined a footpath that eventually took us on to the access road to Lowes Park Golf Club.

From here we headed towards the club house, taking a permissive footpath on the left, and continuing to walk down to Pigs Lee Brook, where we crossed the bridge and walked into a small housing estate. It was just a short distance to Walmersley Old Road, which we walk down and crossed the main road into Springside Road.

At the bottom of the road, we joined a track leading to Springside Farm, but not before negotiating a narrow footpath that was completely blocked by a fallen tree, when the walk leaders checked the route. Fortunately, due to the speedy response of the local Public Rights of Way Officer, the tree had been cleared away before tonight’s walk.

Once under the ELR bridge we turned left and followed the River Irwell back into Burrs Country Park having covered five sunny miles.
